The Big Debate – Destination Wedding or Local Wedding

Choice (noun) – An act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities.

And this is probably something you will experience when planning your wedding. Making a choice between having a local wedding or a Destination Wedding. This is perhaps one of the most important decisions as it sets the framework for how you need to go ahead with your wedding planning. Choosing between either has its pros and cons and there are a couple of ‘how’ and ‘what’ questions you can ask yourself to assist you with making the right choice.

Your guest list

Your wedding could be an ‘either – or’ affair. Either your family has been waiting for this day in which case they would probably want any and everyone they know to be there to shower their blessing and be a part of the celebrations. Or your family and friends are so used to the idea of you both being a couple that getting married is a just a legality and therefore the wedding will be a small affair with family and a few close friends. If you can tell which scenario best describes you, then you definitely know with the first a Local Wedding would be more appropriate and with the second a Destination Wedding.

Budget

Budgeting plays a large part in determining how extravagant your wedding will be. A Destination Wedding would perhaps call for a lot more splurging than a Local Wedding considering most guests now days expect hospitality in the form of lodging charges covered or  an all meal inclusive package on their stay. On the other hand, a Local Wedding would mean majority of your guests managing their own stay and the only aspects you deal with are the wedding functions itself. But do remember the flip side to this means having a lot more invitees turn up as the wedding is taking place in the city.

Access to vendors

Perhaps the most important part of any wedding is the availability and coordination of vendors. Having access to a professional wedding planner who manages this for you helps ease the stress. In some cases the resorts have a list of local vendors which might be handy. Being able to work with a vendor at a Destination Wedding on your own might be a bit of a gamble considering your lack of knowledge on the place or the quality of work produced but in the case of a Local wedding planner, you have references and a body of work to go by.

Style your Wedding 

It is a big day and more importantly it is your day. Your theme might reflect your love story or it might reflect the wedding you’ve always dreamt of. Having said that it is important to understand whether you are looking at a set up that is traditional or contemporary. While a Destination Wedding will be apt for a stylish modern day set up, considering most hotels are up-to-date with modern themes, a local wedding would be a preferable choice if you are looking at something more traditional. Do remember arranging for artists – be it an Entertainer, Hairdresser, Makeup artist etc – is something that plays a key role in determining your look and the feel of the wedding.

Time Frame

Time as always remains a crucial factor. If the date for your wedding has been fixed much before time, a Destination Wedding works well as it gives you ample time to make a few trips to finalize the arrangements. But if time remains an issue, then a Local Wedding seems more apt as it allows you to work within the confines of your current schedule without having to account for travel time to another city.

Couples must remember that a choice of either one does not mean settling in for something because the other seems unachievable but because it seems like the most appropriate way forward after answering the questions above.

The Shehnai

The baraat is the most fun-filled Indian wedding ceremony, and Indian weddings deserve a separate category for how fun and entertaining they are. This is basically the groom’s procession of all his colourful and festive relatives and friends that commences from his house up to the wedding venue. The spruced up groom is perched on a mare (or elephant, if you’re going for the truly regal feel) in all his royalty and escorted to his eagerly waiting bride. The highlight of this ceremony is the crazy dancing the relatives indulge in during the procession. The Sangeet

Sangeet, or music, is synonymous with festivities in India, be it the shehnai at the wedding reception, the bhangda at the after party, the dholakwalis at the mehendi, or the sangeet ceremony before the actual wedding. The tradition, as the name suggests, is all about dance, music, and merry making. This is usually a grand, elaborate affair, encompassing the real spirit of the big fat Indian wedding. Why you should get married on Gudi Padwa by The Wedding Planners Diary

 

People often ask me, what is the most important aspect when you plan a wedding for your client? What do we as clients need to account for?

Before any wedding function takes place, there are a set of licenses which one requires to acquire to ensure a glitch-free wedding.  Most hotels provide clients the list of licenses, which they would require to be submitted to them 24 to 48 hours before the function begins. There may be slight differences in the list provided, depending on the agenda of the function.

Let us hypothetically consider a sangeet function which has everything in it, A closed door invite only event. It is a wedding ceremony filled with loads of fun and frolic with Live Entertainment and a DJ Party to follow.

The list of licenses you would require are:

  • Rangbhoomi License
  • No objection Certificate from the Additional Collectors office
  • No Objection Certificate from the Local Police Station
  • No Objection Certificate from the Traffic Police Department
  • No Objection Certificate from the Fire Brigade
  • Police Commissioners Note

The above licenses come as a cluster of licenses common for any event.

For the DJ at your event, you require:

  • Phonographic Performance Ltd License: For any music apart from music by Yashraj Films.
  • Novex: This license is acquired for any music used at the event which is by Yashraj Films.

Entertainment

If you are having any Live Performance at your event, then you require:

  • IPRS: It stands for Indian Performing Rights Society Ltd. It is issued for any Live Entertainment you plan to have at your event.

Other Licenses Required:

  • Liquor License
  • Public Works Department License: You need to get this when you have a generator at your wedding function.
  • Foreign Artist Permission: Whenever you have people from another nationality performing at your event, you require to submit their documents i.e passport and visa copy to the authorities.

Documents you will require to get these licenses:

  • Floor Plan from the venue
  • No Objection Cerificate from the Venue
  • Letter of Application to different licensing departments on your wedding planner’s company’s letter head along with an affidavit on a stamp paper.
  • Visa and contract copy between the artists and employee company if you have any foreign artists performing. It would be preferable in this case to get artists on a business visa and not an employment visa.

More often than not, it is advisable to ask the hotel what licenses they would require for the event and accordingly proceed.

This Bride Had Her Love Story Embroidered On Her Wedding Lehenga…and we love it!

Kresha Bajaj, the young designer behind the label Koëcsh, married Vanraj Zaveri earlier this year at Udaipur’s Leela Palace.

Kresha knew she wouldn’t wear her wedding lehenga again but wanted to use it in some form or another. Inspiration struck when she remembered how a newlywed in an episode of The Real Housewives had gotten her wedding dress framed and put up in her house like artwork! But what should she have on her lehenga that not just looked like art, but was meaningful enough to be framed? Her love story with Vanraj Of course!

It took months to make the lehenga. The bride and groom’s names were embroidered onto it to form a chevron pattern, as were important moments of their life together—from dating milestones to the proposal, and a hem of jumping dolphins that signified the place where everything began for them.
