Wedding jewellery has always been an essential part of every Indian bride’s entire look. Everything ranging from something as small as a toe ring to as big as a necklace, is equally important in making a bride look complete. Needless to say, all these pieces of the traditional Indian jewellery make a bride look stunningly beautiful and remarkably graceful on the big day of her life. And, among the various Indian bridal jewellery pieces, one of the inevitable parts of every Indian bride’s solah shringar, is the maang tikka. Falling on the forehead of the bride, the maang tikka simply adds elegance to her entire look. What’s more? With time, this beautiful jewellery has evolved into various designs and styles.

So, before you pick up a maang tikka for your wedding, let us tell you the significance of this magnificent piece of jewellery, while also telling you the large variety of designs that it comes in.

Significance of maang tikka

Apart from being a bridal adornment, maang tikka also denotes the union of two souls through the institution of marriage. The point, where the pendant of the maang tikka falls is believed to be the place for the ajna chakra. Represented by two petals, this chakra is symbolic of the sacred union of the male and the female in every aspect, including emotional, spiritual and physical level.

Different types of maang tikkas

There are a lot of beautiful and intricate designs of maang tikkas, which have been the timeless classics in the world of traditional Indian bridal jewellery. So, here are some of the stunning designs of different styles of maang tikkas, which are worn by the Indian brides of different cultures.

#1. Over-sized maang tikkas

A bold bride can prefer large statement pieces to have a distinct look on their special day. You can pick anything from floral or circular patterns in the large studded pieces, and stand out as the bride with most elegant taste.

However, those who are not too confident about being able to carry out the big piece on their face, should better take it easy and avoid it. The bride with long faces or broad foreheads can best carry this style with grace.

#2. Small pendant style

These statement pieces are a popular pick among all those brides, who believe in traditional yet classy look. Single-stranded tikkas might be quite a conservative design, but that is just enough for some brides to look exceptionally elegant and fashionable.

And, there is a whole wide variety of designs in it as well for the brides and newlyweds to look dazzling. From fancy coloured stone tikkas to pearl hangings and ruby, there is a wide range available to pick from. The best part about this little bauble is that it suits all face shapes.

#3. Jhoomar or passa

jhoomar or passa is the traditional ornament of a Muslim bride. This piece of maang tikka hangs on the left side of the forehead. Nowadays, this is also worn in addition to the regular one that falls on the centre of the forehead. The collection comes in various designs, like fan shape, triangular design, round style, etc., and it adds a royal appeal to a bride’s look.

So, if you want to do something different with your look than just going the traditional way, then this noticeably vibrant accessory is a must in your bridal jewellery collection.

#4. One-tier matha Pattis

Another hot trend that rules the world of maang tikkas is the matha Patti. This style has extra layers to the sides, which completely adorns a bride’s forehead. However, you have to be conscious with this ornament to make it stay in its place. Being sleek in design, it goes well with the round-shaped face.

#5. Multi-tier matha Patti

This thick and heavy ‘nawabi style’ maang tikka is yet another hot favourite among the brides. It is almost same as a one-tier maang tikka with the only difference being in the number of chains to the sides. Embellished with a variety of stones, like crystals, rubies, diamonds, etc., the multi-tier matha Patti makes a bride look no less than a queen.

However, this exquisite style does not suit everyone. Brides with wide forehead and cheek area can easily go for this style. It also looks extremely pretty on long faces as it exaggerates their features.

#6. Borla

Worn mostly by the women in the states of Rajasthan and Haryana in India, the borla-style maang tikkas simply make a bride look chic and glamorous. It derives its name from the jujube fruit (called ber or bor in Hindi), as its shape is similar to this fruit. The spherical shape of borla is usually crafted with pearls, stones, rubies, crystals, etc.

The charming borla was even sported by Aishwarya Rai in the movie Jodha Akbar. It looks great on round cut faces, especially when the hair parting is done exactly from the centre of head.

#7. Side-swept style

This is one of the hottest styles of maang tikkas that many brides love to wear these days. Also, called the ‘nawabi style’ half matha patti by many jewellery designers, this maang tikka falls on the side of the forehead, instead of being placed at the centre.

This style comes in yet another variation, where the maang tikka is placed on the centre of the forehead, just like the traditional ones. However, the side panel is only on one of the sides of the forehead. No matter what style does the bride pick, this artistic piece of jewellery simply gives her a majestic look.

Well, we are sure you will simply mesmerize everyone by sporting any of these beautiful styles of maang tikka on your wedding day. So, just pick the one that best suits your face shape and let the man of your dreams go crazy about you, yet again!

  • Primer: For that beautifully clear and radiant skin, go for a good quality primer which is rich in vitamins so that even after wearing layers of make-up, your skin can breathe properly.
  • Foundation: Look for a foundation that matches your skin color. Too much lighter shade can make you look disastrous on stage and in pictures.
  • Concealer: Mostly people don’t need a concealer after applying primer and foundation but you should always keep it in your kit to get away with those dark blemishes.
  • Face Powder: If the wedding is in summers then face powder is a must to save you from melting make-up. It will fix your make-up and help you get a shine free matte finish.
  • Blush: As per your skin tone, pick up pinkish or peachy shade of blush to add definition to your cheekbones. Go for matte blush if your skin is oily and shimmery for normal to dry skin type.
  • Moisturizer: To keep your skin hydrated.
  • Sunscreen: To save yourself from tanning.
  • Face Wipes: For staying fresh all the time.
  • Sindoor and Bindi: Since now you will be a newlywed, this is something you need to carry all the time.
  • Rose Water: For moisture and freshness.

Eyes:

  • Eye-shadow: Its better you keep a palette of eyeshadow that has many colors from light to darker ones, so that you don’t have to panic even if the one you thought will go well with your dress actually did not create the same magic.
  • Kajal Pencil: Black is the evergreen color for eye make-up as it goes well with every eye color, but you can always have blue or green color for a chic look.
  • Eyeliner: Liner can be liquid based, gel based or like a sketch pen, go for the one which you are comfortable using.
  • Eyelash Curler: If you are not very comfortable using false eyelashes then you must keep an eyelash curler to perfectly spread them out and to make your eyes look bigger.
  • Mascara: Go for a good quality waterproof mascara to make your lashes look darker and thicker.

Lips:

Miscellaneous :

12 Things to Check with your Make-Up Artist before Booking Them!

This blog has been written by Shruti Sharma for WedMeGood.com

While we are often called a bride’s best friend, we thought it would be nice to hear from the other side for once. So we got some solid advice from a makeup artist who tells you what you should look for before booking your bridal makeup.  Shruti Sharma, one of Delhi’s most popular artists ventures into some good old-fashioned advice on how to hire and get the best out of your makeup. In other words, the few ways in which you can make good use of them on your wedding day. Hear, hear!

MakeUp

Don’t Delay Bookings

  1. Ideally one should start calling and enquiring with vendors right after your dates get fixed. Some vendors get booked months in advance sodon’t delayand start reviewing the work of various artists and calling them to check their availability and charges.

Meet one on one

  1. Once you have shortlisted, its best to meet with them one on one. Many makeup artists offer trials (some charge for them while others offer them for free). Meeting them would give you a good sense of their personality, work style and even help you understand how comfortable you will be having them in close confines with you on your wedding day.

Questions to ask them

  1. Ask them about
  • Their team:Who will be working on you, who does hair, does the MUA do all the makeup?
  • The productsthey use
  • The timethey will take to get you ready
  • Do they allow photographers to shoot while the makeup is going on?
  • Other bookingthey have on the same day

Services to Include

  1. At whatever price that they quote, you should ideally be getting:
  • Hairstyling
  • Nail paints
  • Draping
  • Eyelashes
  • Maybe even a shampoo (if you are at their salon)

So that you don’t have to look for anyone else’s help to get completely ready. If you aren’t getting this, then get a quote which includes all of this.

Discounts vs Haggles

  1. It’s one thing to ask for a discount or a package deal, but another to haggle. Please understand asking once is alright but it’s never a good idea to push too much. Trust me you don’t want them to cut costs in the quality of products or services they offer for that might just become a painful experience!

Advance Deposits

  1. Like any other vendors, makeup artists too take an advance deposit which is not refundable. The balance needs to be paid by the date of your wedding! Makeup artists who are thorough professionals reach the location on time, deliver on the look that was decided and put a lot of physical effort in getting a bride ready and to make her look more beautiful than ever. You should also hold your end of the deal and make the payments on time. No negotiations on that!

Other Bookings

  1. If hiring a freelancer, find out if they have any other bookings on that date and make sure you get ample time from them for yourself. In such cases it is important that both you and the makeup artist stick to the pre-decided timelines.

Family Members

  1. Once you have booked them, please specify in advance if you have other members of your family and friendswho would like help in getting ready and exactly what services they need. The makeup artist will plan ahead and keep the products and resources available to meet your needs and in such a case please be ready to pay extra for the services at a pre-decided/discussed charges. Ever go to a restaurant and say my main order is butter chickenbut I would like thoda sa palak paneer or bas itna sa rajma? No you don’t! So why here? A makeup artist will do what they are commissioned to do. If you want to request them to handle some extra people on an ad-hoc basis, ask them first and be ready to pay for the services!

Delays

  1.  Delays have become synonymous with so many Indian weddings these days! It’s hard to keep everything in control and make sure its all going as per schedule. So be real with the vendors. Keep in touch with them on the day of your functions and tell them the status in advance. That’s better than having them wait half a day burning their time and energy at your venue! If visiting a salon, you might get a time slot from them when you can come in and get dedicated time with your makeup artist. Try and be there on time and if in case you can’t, be patient and wait a bit before the artist can start with you. At that time even though it might be getting very late for you, there is no time to rush and panic. Take a deep breath, inform the artist that you are short on time and let them do their best!

Cancellations

  1.  In case you cancel for absolutely any reason, be prepared to forgo the advance amount that you gave them to block their dates for you. In case the makeup artist cancels (which ideally they shouldn’t but since they are humans too, cancellations may happen due to sickness or any other emergencies). There is no harm in asking for a back up plan. If a makeup artist is cancelling for any reason, they should be able to provide you with someone else to fill in for them and save the day. The charges too that you pay in that case can be negotiated based on who the back up artist is.

Outstation Makeup Charges

  1. 11Normally if you hire a makeup artist for a wedding outside of their city, chances are they will charge extra. They will be dedicating their entire time to you along with their team. It is also a norm to arrange for the travel and stay for the artist and the team. I understand that you may want to cut costs at times but please make sure the artist or anyone from the team is not having to share their room with any of your guests! Its NOT because the makeup artists aren’t flexible/don’t want to mix with your crowd/Don’t appreciate your hospitality and your ever-growing comfort level with them. It is because they are there to WORK and they need their rest!

Communicate

  1. While they are actually getting you ready, be free to tell them what you like and what you are not comfortable with. You should be happy with the way you look on the best day of your life!

Lastly, and this is important!

We makeup artists have handpicked our teams from the hundreds out there to form one where each member is highly skilled at their job, extremely hard-working and highly motivated to give you their best. It is this team that makes us tick. They are the unsung heroes without whom all the beautiful pics you see on our profiles would be impossible. We come across such different types of people. Ones who show immense kindness and also the ones who are downright rude to our teams the minute we turn our backs.

Don’t forget, that person getting you water or painting your nails is a human too and can make mistakes. They work countless hours and through the toughest days to make your day amazing. If you aren’t happy with anything, there are plenty of ways to tell them politely without being rude or raising your voice. Let them know nicely and chances are they will go an extra mile and put in more than what’s expected to make your day extra special! They will not give up until you are satisfied with the results. Be rude to them and you will not only lose their respect but ours too.

“A little thought and a little kindness are often worth more than a great deal of money” – John Ruskin

Your big day does not only mean the start of a new journey but it also means a moment where you will be the attention of all eyes. This moment undoubtedly brings a natural glow to every bride’s face, but amidst this glow could be signs of the stress and exhaustion faced during the wedding preparations. Here’s a quick guide to help every bride look her best for her wedding day. As the countdown to your wedding begins, so does a countdown for your grooming plan.

 Hair

Indian weddings generally span a couple of days and with every occasion; the bride would like to look her best. This calls for the possibility of different hairstyles and hair that can take the stress of repeated styling.

Haircuts Refrain from cutting your hair too short prior to the wedding. This should be done a couple of months in advance as maintaining hair length enables the stylist to style the hair in as many ways as possible during the wedding. The most a bride can resort to in terms of haircuts is a hair trim ten days prior to the wedding.

Highlights & color Every bride might get the urge to get experimental to look her best but we strongly recommend staying away from taking extreme steps. Highlights and color should be done well in advance to give the look enough time to settle and allow implementation of a plan B in case the look is not as expected.

Oiling & hair spa As you and your stylist plan various hairdos for the wedding; do remember that repeated styling and use of chemicals can cause some serious stress to your tresses. Keep them nourished with oil treatments and hair spa treatments once or twice a week from at least two months prior to the wedding.

We will be posting tips about caring for your skin before D-day in our next blog post.
